News about co-ops, especially in the greater  Philadelphia region, has been popping up everywhere lately. And that’s great news!

Here’s an article we found on Flying Kite. It talks about the variety of co-ops we have in the Mid-Atlantic, MAFCA (Doylestown Food Co-p is a member), and how successful Pennsylvania has been with our co-ops.

“For some, the concept of food co-ops may conjure up images of leafy greens, and granola, with members sharing the work. Although this model still works in some areas, the co-op of today is just as likely to be a modern storefront offering a full range of groceries, with an emphasis on the healthful, locally grown, organic, economically conscious, and/or fair trade.

It’s clear that the co-op model is still an attractive one, as evidenced by seven new start-ups in Eastern Pennsylvania, from Chester to Doylestown and an eighth in Scranton…” Read the full article

Take a Fresh look at food with the Co-op at our Fall movie night! Fresh is an award-winning documentary about sustainable agriculture and the people around the country who are making it happen!

Movie starts at 7:00 p.m.

Join us or a screening of Fresh, the Movie. We’ve partnered with Heritage Conservancy and Bucks County Foodshed Alliance to bring you this event at the beautiful Aldie Mansion.

“FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.”

The evening will include a Q&A session with Co-op Board members, light refreshments for sale, raffle baskets (with chances for free tickets!) and co-op membership sign-ups. Checks are appreciated for membership sign-up.

*Advance tickets are on sale now and can be purchased for $10 by mailing a check (please include your email address and phone number as your tickets will be emailed to you), by November 28th, to the co-op at PO Box 951 Doylestown, PA 18901. Tickets can also be conveniently purchased online for $11.75.

Be sure to pre-purchase yours, as we were sorry to turn away viewers at our sold-out spring movie event at the County Theater.
